The Beatles, She’s leaving home

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Songs, The Beatles

Lyrics

She’s leaving home

Wednesday morning at five o’clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her hankerchief
Quietly turning the backdoor key
Stepping outside she is free.
She (We gave her most of our lives)
Is leaving (Sacrificed most of our lives)
Home (We gave her everything money could buy)
She’s leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that’s lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband
Daddy our baby’s gone.
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly
How could she do this to me.
She (We never thought of ourselves)
Is leaving (Never a thought for ourselves)
Home (We struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She’s leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Friday morning at nine o’clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade.
She (What did we do that was wrong?)
Is having (We didn’t know it was wrong)
Fun (Fun is the one thing that money can’t buy)
Something inside that was always denied
For so many years. Bye, bye
She’s leaving home. Bye, bye

Curiosities

This was based on a newspaper story Paul McCartney read about a runaway girl. On February 27th, 1967 the London Daily Mail’s headline read: “A-level girl dumps car and vanishes.” That girl was 17-year-old Melanie Coe, who had ran away from home leaving everything behind. Her father was quoted as saying, “I cannot imagine why she should run away, she has everything here.” McCartney said in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, “We’d seen that story and it was my inspiration. There was a lot of these at the time and that was enough to give us the storyline. So I started to get the lyrics: she slips out and leaves a note and the parents wake up, it was rather poignant. I like it as a song and when I showed it to John, he added the Greek chorus and long sustained notes. One of the nice things about the structure of the song is that it stays on those chords endlessly.”
Some of the lyrics were things John Lennon’s Aunt Mimi said to him as a child. She raised John after his parents separated.
No Beatles played instruments on this. John and Paul contributed vocals, which were double-tracked to sound like a quartet, and session musicians played strings. The first female to play on a Beatles album, Sheila Bromberg, played harp.
The string section was arranged by Mike Leander because producer George Martin was busy. Leander would later arrange strings for The Rolling Stones on “As Tears Go By.”

James Blunt, Same mistake

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

Same mistake

Saw the world turning in my sheets and once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street; look at the stars beneath my feet.
Remember rights that I did wrong, so here I go.
Hello, hello. There is no place I cannot go.
My mind is muddy but my heart is heavy. Does it show?
I lose the track that loses me, so here I go.
And so I sent some men to fight, and one came back at dead of night.
Said he’d seen my enemy. Said he looked just like me,
So I set out to cut myself and here I go.
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.
And maybe someday we will meet, and maybe talk and not just speak.
Don’t buy the promises ’cause, there are no promises I keep.
And my reflection troubles me, so here I go.
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake,
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.
Saw the world turning in my sheets and once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street; look at the stars.
Look at the stars fall down.
And wonder where did I go wrong.

Curiosities

In this song Blunt grieves over a broken relationship but claims he would make the same mistake again given the chance.
Blunt performed this song before an estimated television audience of 2 billion people at the 2007 Live Earth event.
This was featured in the film 2007 movie P.S. I Love You, starring Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow and Gerald Butler and was used in its promotional campaign.
Blunt told ilikemusic.com: “It’s a song about self reflection. It looks at remorse and guilt, about how we make mistakes as humans, how we are fallible. Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy.”
Blunt told VH1: “I wrote the song on tour. It’s a play in the words – ‘Give me a reason, but don’t give me a choice, ’cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.’ We toured with that song, and we tried it a few times and I stopped playing it toward the end of the tour because I wanted to save it up a little.”

Amy Macdonald, Run

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Amy Macdonald, Songs

Lyrics

Run

Will you tell me when your lines are fading?
Cos I can’t see
I can’t see no more

Will you tell me when the song stops playing?
Cos I can’t hear
I can’t hear no more

She said “I don’t know what you’re living for”
She said “I don’t know what you’re living for at all”
He said “I don’t know what you’re living for”
He said “I don’t know what you’re living for at all”

But I will run until my feet no longer run no more
And I will kiss until my lips no longer feel no more
And I will laugh until my heart it aches
And I will love until my heart it breaks
And I will love until there’s nothing more to live for

Will you tell me when the fighting’s over?
Cos I can’t take
I can’t take no more

Will you tell me the day is done?
Cos I can’t run
I can’t run no more

She said “I don’t know what you did it for”
She said “I don’t know what you did it for at all”
He said “I don’t know what you did it for”
He said “I don’t know what you did it for at all”

But I will run until my feet no longer run no more
And I will kiss until my lips no longer feel no more
And I will laugh until my heart it aches
And I will love until my heart it breaks
And I will love until there’s nothing more to live for

And I will laugh until my heart it aches
And I will love until my heart it breaks
And I will love until there’s nothing more to live for

Curiosities

Amy MacDonald told the Daily Mail January 18, 2008 that this song about following one’s dreams was inspired by the band The Killers: “I saw The Killers live and they’re amazing.”

Amy Macdonald, Poison Prince

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Amy Macdonald, Songs

Lyrics

Poison Prince

The poet’s a genius,
Its something I don’t see,
Why would a genius be trippin on me?

And there’s looking and another ,
Why he can’t see is that I’m looking through his eyes,
So many lies behind his eyes.
Tell me stories from your past,
And sing me songs you wrote before.

I tell u this my Poison Prince,
You’ll soon be knocking on Heaven’s door.

Some kind of Poison Prince,
With your eyes in daze.
Some kind of Poison Prince,
Your life is like a maze.

And what we all want and what we all crave,
Is open up these doors,
So that we can dance the night away.

Who said life was easy,
Who said life was fair,
Who said no one gives a dam,
And no one even cared.

The way you’re acting now,
Like you left that all behind.
You’ve given up,
You’ve given in,
And I’m a sucker of that kind.

Some kind of Poison Prince,
With your eyes in daze.
Some kind of Poison Prince,
Your life is like a maze.

And what we all want and what we all crave,
Is open up these doors ,
So that we can dance the night away.

Some kind of Poison Prince,
With your eyes in daze.
Some kind of Poison Prince,
Your life is like a maze.

And what we all want and what we all crave,
Is open up these doors ,
So that we can dance the night away

Curiosities

This was written about Pete Doherty, then of The Libertines. MacDonald explained to the Daily Mail January 18, 2008: “My friends and I used to love dancing to The Libertines in clubs. I love him as a musician – but I don’t love the junkie Pete Doherty.” She added: “I wrote this after seeing Ray, the Jamie Foxx film about Ray Charles. I think Pete is a similar character.”

James Blunt, One of the brightest stars

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

One of the brightest stars

One day your story will be told.
One of the lucky ones who’s made his name.
One day they’ll make you glorious,
Beneath the lights of your deserved fame.
And it all comes round.
Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Everybody loves you ’cause you’ve taken a chance,
Out on a dance to the moon, too soon.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.
One day they’ll tell you that you’ve changed,
Though they’re the ones who seem to stop and stare.
One day you’ll hope to make the grave,
Before the papers choose to send you there.
And it all comes round.
Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Nobody loves you ’cause you’ve taken a chance,
Out on a dance to the moon, too soon.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest

Curiosities

In the Daily Mail from August 24, 2007, Blunt said of this song: “It’s about the way that people’s perceptions of me have changed.”
Blunt told VH1 about this song: “It’s about a shift in a perceived reality – the way things change when you’re in the media eye, I suppose. It’s about when you go from being an anonymous musician to a public media object. I wrote that towards the end of last summer – I was reading about somebody who I didn’t recognize.”
This song contains the lyric, “One day you’ll hope to make the grave, before the papers send you there” Blunt explained to The Independent why he is irritated by newspapers: “I used to read the papers and think they were telling the truth, and now I recognize that they don’t and that most forms of journalism are just embellishments of stories. It’s a remarkable eye-opener. So, yeah, I’m less trusting of journalists. I did an interview in LA and I said, ‘It’s nice here, isn’t it?’, and when I read the interview, the quote had been changed to, ‘Isn’t it absolutely delightful here?’”

Amy Macdonald, Mr. Rock & Roll

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Amy Macdonald, Songs

Lyrics

Mr. Rock & Roll

So called Mr Rock And Roll
Is dancing on his own again
Talking on his phone again
To someone who tells him that his balance is low
He’s got no where to go
He’s on his own again

Rock chick of the century
Is acting like she used to be
Dancing like there’s no one there
Before she never seemed to care
Now she wouldn’t dare
It’s so rock and roll to be alone

And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say “I wish I was something more”
And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say ” I wish I knew you, I wish I knew you before”

Mrs Black and White
She’s never seen a shade of grey
Always something on her mind
Every single day
But now she’s lost her way
And where does she go from here

Mr Multicultural
Sees all that one can see
He’s living proof of someone
Very different to me
But now he wants to be free
Free so he can see

And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say “I wish I was something more”
And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say “I wish I knew you, I wish I knew you before”

He says “I wish I knew you, I wish I met you
When time was still on my side”
She’ll say ” I wish I knew you, I wish I loved you
Before I was his bride”

And so they must depart
Too many more are broken hearts
But I’ve seen that all before
In TV, books and film and more
And there’s a happy ending
Every single day

And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say “I wish I was something more”
And they’ll meet one day
Far away
And say “I wish I knew you, I wish I knew you before”

Curiosities

Amy MacDonald explained to the Liverpool Daily Post that this song is about people rather than music. She said: “The whole message is just be yourself. It’s about two people who’ve been pretending to be something they’re not in order to fit in with a certain group, and because of that, these amazing people who would have got on so well and made a brilliant couple pass each other by. Both of them have been feeling that they’ve had to fit in elsewhere, but they’ve missed out as a result.”

Amy Macdonald, L.A.

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Amy Macdonald, Songs

Lyrics

L.A.

The inspiration for this song came from Scottish singer Amy MacDonald’s admiration for the actor Jake Gyllenhaal. On BBC Berkshire she explained: “Well I was just thinking and I thought everyone has somebody that they idolize – be it an actor or a sports player or a singer or whatnot. But I think in general that people should value their own dreams and their own achievements, even if we don’t do things as great as being in a Hollywood blockbuster. Just be proud of what we achieve ourselves.”
She wrote on her MySpace: “If I’m honest I really don’t like ‘LA’ all that much and don’t think it represents the album one bit.”

James Blunt, I’ll take everything

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

I’ll take everything

Oh these feet carry me far. Oh my body. Oh so tired.
Mouth is dry. Hardly speak. Holy Spirit rise in me.
Here I swear, forever is just a minute to me.
I’ll take everything in this life.
I’ll join everyone when I die.
Have my body. Have my mind. Have my coat. Take my time.
These I borrow. Borrow so far. Turn to dust. Fall apart.
Here I swear, forever is just a minute to me.
I’ll take everything in this life.
I’ll join everyone and understand.
‘Cause all men die. ‘Cause all men die.
I’ll take everything in this life
I’ll join everyone since I’m gonna die
I’ll take everything in this life
I’ll join everyone ’cause all men die

James Blunt (from the Daily Mail August 24, 2007): “it’s about mortality. Life is short and we should try to share it with people.”

James Blunt, I can’t hear the music

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

1973

Is it a warning? Is it an evil sign?
Is it a people who have lost their mind?
Is it the Darkness? Is it a man resigned?
Is it a best friend leaving you behind?
Is it ever gonna stop? Will they ever let you go?
You’re in a rush, they don’t care enough ’cause their lives are very slow.
Time is ticking on. You don’t get a second shot,
And when you sell your soul for a leading role, will The Lost Souls be forgot?
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone,
I’ll dance here on my own.
And I hope the Lonely Hearts’ Club Band will play out one last song,
Before the sun goes down.
And is it envy? Should it really make you sick?
Is now the time that you realise you’d better get out quick?
‘Cause time is ticking on too long to fake your smile,
But then you sold your soul for a leading role, so wear it for a while.
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone,
I’ll dance here on my own.
And I hope the Lonely Hearts’ Club Band will play out one last song,
Before the sun goes down,
And there she goes. And there she goes.
So run, Yoshimi, run. ‘Cause Billy’s got himself a gun,
And you’re right to be afraid: they’ll send you to your grave
‘Cause you’re strange and new.
So run, Yoshimi, run. ‘Cause Billy’s got himself a gun,
And you’re right to be afraid: they’ll send you to your grave
‘Cause you’re strange and new.
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone, I’ll dance.

Curiosities

In this song Blunt is saying that even after the fans’ applause has faded and the curtain has come down for the last time, the music remains. He explained on his record label’s website: “The chorus sums it up: ‘And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone, I’ll dance here on my own.’ It’s about saying I’m in it for the passion. I’m in it for the love of it, and the audience may be a temporary thing.”
The line “And I hope the Lonely Hearts Club Band will play out one last song” is a direct reference to The Beatles album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was made with a concept of a separate band performing.
The lyrics, “So won’t you run, Yoshimi, run?” are a reference to the Flaming Lips song “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.”

James Blunt, Goodbye my lover

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

Goodbye my lover

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
‘Cause I saw the end before we’d begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what’s mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won’t stop there,
I am here for you if you’d only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I’ve kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I’ve been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me. (X2)

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can’t break my spirit – it’s my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I’ve seen you cry, I’ve seen you smile.
I’ve watched you sleeping for a while.
I’d be the father of your child.
I’d spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We’ve had our doubts but now we’re fine,
And I love you, I swear that’s true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me. (x2)

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I’m asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I’m kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I’m so hollow, baby, I’m so hollow.
I’m so, I’m so, I’m so hollow.
I’m so hollow, baby, I’m so hollow.
I’m so, I’m so, I’m so hollow.

Curiosities

James Blunt lived with actress Carrie Fisher while he recorded Back To Bedlam. He met her through a family friend.
In the Radio Times February 4th-10th 2006, James Blunt described how he recorded this song in Carrie Fisher’s bathroom: “For Goodbye My Lover, we needed a piano. There wasn’t one in the home studio we recorded in but Carrie had one in her bathroom. So I said, “Let’s get the home studio and spend the night in there. It was a good acoustic – that’s why people sing in the shower. And it sounds great to me – that’s what’s on the album.”
