James Blunt, You’re beautiful

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

You’re beautiful

My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I’m sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won’t lose no sleep on that,
‘Cause I’ve got a plan.

You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful, it’s true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don’t know what to do,
‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Fucking high,
And I don’t think that I’ll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful, it’s true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don’t know what to do,
‘Cause I’ll never be with you.
You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful, it’s true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it’s time to face the truth,
I will never be with you

Curiosities

Blunt said on VH1′s The Vspot that he wrote this song about seeing his ex-girlfriend with a new man who he didn’t know about on a train in the London underground. He says that they shared a lifetime in the brief eye contact. The words came to him all at once.
In a February edition of Radio Times, James Blunt responded to a question about the girl he sings about: “The girl in question is my ex-girlfriend and she’s with her new man. I’ve always said that I haven’t seen her since and then the press tried to find her. I’m not bothered enough to start acknowledging or denying whether they found her.”
The girl that inspired this song is Dixie Chassay, who works in the casting department on films. Blunt mentions her in the thank you note on his first album.
In the radio edit, the line “I was f–king high” is replaced with “I was flying high.”
The Daily Record March 22, 2008 asked Blunt if he was bored with this monster hit. The singer-songwriter replied: “If I had the radio on all the time and they kept playing that song then yes, I’d probably turn it off. But do I still like the song? Absolutely. It’s a really personal song about a moment which meant a great deal to me. And I’m sure plenty of guys have seen their ex-girlfriend with a new man at some stage. It bites into you and I captured that in a really honest song. I love that song for capturing that moment. I’m saddened by what it reminds me of, and I appreciate what it did which is advertise an album I’d made.”

James Blunt, So long Jimmy

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

So long Jimmy

I just can’t believe that it’s over.
We were chilling out on the sofa,
Digging how the guitar goes,
In a song that no one knows.
Did you lick that line yourself,
Or did the voodoo magic help?
Does everyone have a different take?
Do you seem real but I seem fake?
Does everyone get hypnotized by your fire?

So long, Jimmy, so long.
Though you only stayed a moment,
We all know that you’re the one. Singing,
So long, Jimmy, so long.
Sure we’re glad for the experience,
We miss you now you’ve gone.
We’re just swimming in your soul ’cause,
We all wish we wrote this song.
Life goes on.

I’m just so relieved that it’s over.
We were hanging out going nowhere,
Digging how the guitar goes,
In a song that no one knows.
Did you burn that bridge yourself,
Or did the voodoo magic help?
Does everyone have a different take?
Are you just cool and I’m just baked?
Does everyone get mesmerized by your fire?

So long, Jimmy, so long.
Though you only stayed a moment,
We all know that you’re the one. Singing,
So long, Jimmy, so long.
Sure we’re glad for the experience,
We miss you now you’ve gone.
We’re just swimming in your soul ’cause,
We all wish we wrote this song.
Life goes on.

Curiosities

This is a tribute to legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, who died in 1970. The verse is about sitting around doing guitar licks, and the “Voodoo Magic” is a reference to Jimi’s song “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and to drugs (which Jimi openly used while recording). The line, “We’re glad for The Experience, we’ll miss you now it’s gone” is a reference to The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Jimi’s massively influential band. The line, “Does everyone have a different take” refers to Jimi again, as he never played a song the same twice – every take was different. The line “Does everyone get hypnotized by your fire” is a reference to Jimi again, as Hendrix is famous for lighting his guitar on fire on stage and everyone was ‘mesmerized” by his fire. “We all wish we wrote this song” because astonishingly there has been few tribute songs for Jimi. And “Life goes on” because every guitarist in the world today is influenced by Hendrix in some way despite his death.

James Blunt, Same mistake

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

Same mistake

Saw the world turning in my sheets and once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street; look at the stars beneath my feet.
Remember rights that I did wrong, so here I go.
Hello, hello. There is no place I cannot go.
My mind is muddy but my heart is heavy. Does it show?
I lose the track that loses me, so here I go.
And so I sent some men to fight, and one came back at dead of night.
Said he’d seen my enemy. Said he looked just like me,
So I set out to cut myself and here I go.
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.
And maybe someday we will meet, and maybe talk and not just speak.
Don’t buy the promises ’cause, there are no promises I keep.
And my reflection troubles me, so here I go.
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake,
I’m not calling for a second chance,
I’m screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don’t give me choice.
‘Cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.
Saw the world turning in my sheets and once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street; look at the stars.
Look at the stars fall down.
And wonder where did I go wrong.

Curiosities

In this song Blunt grieves over a broken relationship but claims he would make the same mistake again given the chance.
Blunt performed this song before an estimated television audience of 2 billion people at the 2007 Live Earth event.
This was featured in the film 2007 movie P.S. I Love You, starring Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow and Gerald Butler and was used in its promotional campaign.
Blunt told ilikemusic.com: “It’s a song about self reflection. It looks at remorse and guilt, about how we make mistakes as humans, how we are fallible. Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy.”
Blunt told VH1: “I wrote the song on tour. It’s a play in the words – ‘Give me a reason, but don’t give me a choice, ’cause I’ll just make the same mistake again.’ We toured with that song, and we tried it a few times and I stopped playing it toward the end of the tour because I wanted to save it up a little.”

James Blunt, One of the brightest stars

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

One of the brightest stars

One day your story will be told.
One of the lucky ones who’s made his name.
One day they’ll make you glorious,
Beneath the lights of your deserved fame.
And it all comes round.
Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Everybody loves you ’cause you’ve taken a chance,
Out on a dance to the moon, too soon.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.
One day they’ll tell you that you’ve changed,
Though they’re the ones who seem to stop and stare.
One day you’ll hope to make the grave,
Before the papers choose to send you there.
And it all comes round.
Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Nobody loves you ’cause you’ve taken a chance,
Out on a dance to the moon, too soon.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.
And they’ll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest

Curiosities

In the Daily Mail from August 24, 2007, Blunt said of this song: “It’s about the way that people’s perceptions of me have changed.”
Blunt told VH1 about this song: “It’s about a shift in a perceived reality – the way things change when you’re in the media eye, I suppose. It’s about when you go from being an anonymous musician to a public media object. I wrote that towards the end of last summer – I was reading about somebody who I didn’t recognize.”
This song contains the lyric, “One day you’ll hope to make the grave, before the papers send you there” Blunt explained to The Independent why he is irritated by newspapers: “I used to read the papers and think they were telling the truth, and now I recognize that they don’t and that most forms of journalism are just embellishments of stories. It’s a remarkable eye-opener. So, yeah, I’m less trusting of journalists. I did an interview in LA and I said, ‘It’s nice here, isn’t it?’, and when I read the interview, the quote had been changed to, ‘Isn’t it absolutely delightful here?’”

James Blunt, I’ll take everything

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

I’ll take everything

Oh these feet carry me far. Oh my body. Oh so tired.
Mouth is dry. Hardly speak. Holy Spirit rise in me.
Here I swear, forever is just a minute to me.
I’ll take everything in this life.
I’ll join everyone when I die.
Have my body. Have my mind. Have my coat. Take my time.
These I borrow. Borrow so far. Turn to dust. Fall apart.
Here I swear, forever is just a minute to me.
I’ll take everything in this life.
I’ll join everyone and understand.
‘Cause all men die. ‘Cause all men die.
I’ll take everything in this life
I’ll join everyone since I’m gonna die
I’ll take everything in this life
I’ll join everyone ’cause all men die

Curiosities

James Blunt (from the Daily Mail August 24, 2007): “it’s about mortality. Life is short and we should try to share it with people.”

James Blunt, I can’t hear the music

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

1973

Is it a warning? Is it an evil sign?
Is it a people who have lost their mind?
Is it the Darkness? Is it a man resigned?
Is it a best friend leaving you behind?
Is it ever gonna stop? Will they ever let you go?
You’re in a rush, they don’t care enough ’cause their lives are very slow.
Time is ticking on. You don’t get a second shot,
And when you sell your soul for a leading role, will The Lost Souls be forgot?
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone,
I’ll dance here on my own.
And I hope the Lonely Hearts’ Club Band will play out one last song,
Before the sun goes down.
And is it envy? Should it really make you sick?
Is now the time that you realise you’d better get out quick?
‘Cause time is ticking on too long to fake your smile,
But then you sold your soul for a leading role, so wear it for a while.
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone,
I’ll dance here on my own.
And I hope the Lonely Hearts’ Club Band will play out one last song,
Before the sun goes down,
And there she goes. And there she goes.
So run, Yoshimi, run. ‘Cause Billy’s got himself a gun,
And you’re right to be afraid: they’ll send you to your grave
‘Cause you’re strange and new.
So run, Yoshimi, run. ‘Cause Billy’s got himself a gun,
And you’re right to be afraid: they’ll send you to your grave
‘Cause you’re strange and new.
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone, I’ll dance.

Curiosities

In this song Blunt is saying that even after the fans’ applause has faded and the curtain has come down for the last time, the music remains. He explained on his record label’s website: “The chorus sums it up: ‘And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone, I’ll dance here on my own.’ It’s about saying I’m in it for the passion. I’m in it for the love of it, and the audience may be a temporary thing.”
The line “And I hope the Lonely Hearts Club Band will play out one last song” is a direct reference to The Beatles album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was made with a concept of a separate band performing.
The lyrics, “So won’t you run, Yoshimi, run?” are a reference to the Flaming Lips song “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.”

James Blunt, Goodbye my lover

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

Goodbye my lover

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
‘Cause I saw the end before we’d begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what’s mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won’t stop there,
I am here for you if you’d only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I’ve kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I’ve been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me. (X2)

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can’t break my spirit – it’s my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I’ve seen you cry, I’ve seen you smile.
I’ve watched you sleeping for a while.
I’d be the father of your child.
I’d spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We’ve had our doubts but now we’re fine,
And I love you, I swear that’s true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me. (x2)

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I’m asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I’m kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I’m so hollow, baby, I’m so hollow.
I’m so, I’m so, I’m so hollow.
I’m so hollow, baby, I’m so hollow.
I’m so, I’m so, I’m so hollow.

Curiosities

James Blunt lived with actress Carrie Fisher while he recorded Back To Bedlam. He met her through a family friend.
In the Radio Times February 4th-10th 2006, James Blunt described how he recorded this song in Carrie Fisher’s bathroom: “For Goodbye My Lover, we needed a piano. There wasn’t one in the home studio we recorded in but Carrie had one in her bathroom. So I said, “Let’s get the home studio and spend the night in there. It was a good acoustic – that’s why people sing in the shower. And it sounds great to me – that’s what’s on the album.”

James Blunt, 1973

Author: Cédric  //  Category: James Blunt, Songs

Lyrics

1973

Simona
You’re getting older
Your journey’s been etched
On your skin

Simona
Wish I had known that
What seemed so strong
Has been and gone

I would call you up every Saturday night
And we’d both stay out ’til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973
Singing, “Here we go again”

Simona
Wish I was sober
So I could see clearly now
The rain has gone

Simona
I guess it’s over
My memory plays our tune
The same old song

I would call you up every Saturday night
And we’d both stay out ’til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973
Singing, “Here we go again”

I would call you up every Saturday night
And we’d both stay out ’til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973
Singing, “Here we go again”

I would call you up every Saturday night
And we’d both stay out ’til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973
Singing, “Here we go again”

And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973

Curiosities

This song is a celebration of good times spent in the Pacha nightclub on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. After 2 years on the road promoting his debut album, James Blunt retreated to a house he’d bought on Ibiza. There he took stock and wrote songs for his new album. According to Blunt, the girl “Simona” mentioned several times in the lyrics was based on a real woman whom he met at a club.
ilikemusic.com asked James Blunt what 1973 meant to him personally. He replied: “Well I was born in 1978. So I wrote it about a girl called Simona in a song about a nostalgic moment – it’s a celebration of something we did last year in Ibiza. And Pacha originally opened in 1973, but 1973 was also a great year for music, so many fantastic albums came out at that time.”
