Coldplay, Yellow

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Yellow

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all Yellow

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called Yellow

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all Yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know you know I love you so
You know I love you so

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do

’cause you were all Yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all Yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know
For you I’d bleed myself dry
For you I’d bleed myself dry

It’s true
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do

Curiosities

Lead singer Chris Martin has said that the lyrics are about being devoted to someone, wanting to do anything for them – writing a song for them, swimming across the sea for them and so on. He said that it’s not necessarily a romantic devotion, but someone that you look up to and would do anything for, a brotherly love.
The color yellow can have many negative implications (“Yellow Journalism,” “Yellow Fever,” a “Yellow Card” for a foul in soccer), but for Coldplay, it is a beautiful color. According to lead singer Chris Martin, “It was simply because that word sounded nice, it just seemed to fit, no other reason. None of the other colors would have sounded right really!”
The video is one continuous shot of Chris Martin walking on a beach in England. The plan was to shoot the band walking along a sunny beach with lots of people lying around, but Coldplay drummer Will Champion’s mother died shortly before the shoot. The film crew and extras were already hired, so with the band’s blessing, Martin went by himself while the other members attended the funeral. It was raining that day, so instead of using the extras, they had Martin alone on the beach. Parachutes is dedicated to Champion’s mother.

Coldplay, Viva la vida

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Viva la vida

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
“Now the old king is dead, long live the king!”

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, my shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string (Ooooh)
Ah, who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh Ooooh
(repeat with chorus)

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, my shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooooh Oooooooh Oooooooh

Curiosities

Frontman Chris Martin told Rolling Stone that he christened this song and the album “Viva la Vida” – meaning “long live life” or more literally, “the life lives” – after he saw the phrase on a painting by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo. He explained: “She went through a lot of s–t, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida.’ I just loved the boldness of it.”
The movie Frida, starring Salma Hayek, is about her life. You can see the painting that inspired the title in Song Images.
The painting which inspired the song is this one:
http://www.artisjoy.com/images/frida3p.jpg

Bassist Guy Berryman explained to Q magazine July 2008 about this song that features lyrics about cavalries, missionaries and kings: “It’s a story about a king who’s lost his kingdom, and all the album’s artwork is based on the idea of revolutionaries and guerrillas. There’s this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that’s crept into some of the lyrics and it’s some of the payoff between being surrounded by governments on one side, but also we’re human beings with emotions and we’re all going to die and the stupidity of what we have to put up with every day. Hence the album title.” Q magazine asked Chris Martin about the lyric on this song “I know Saint Peter won’t call my name.” The Coldplay lead singer replied: “It’s about… You’re not on the list. I was a naughty boy. It’s always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it. And it’s that runs through most religions. That’s why people blow up buildings. Because they think they’re going to get lots of virgins. I always feel like saying, Just join a band (cackles head off). That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation. I know about this stuff because I studied it. I was into it all. I know it. It’s still mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious.”

Drummer Will Champion told Q magazine February 2008 that many of the tracks on the album share a theme of “trying to remember what’s important in your life, rather than being carried away by the trappings of other things.”

Chris Martin spoke to MTV News about this song: “I think everything we’re trying to do at the moment is about not starting again so much as breaking down what we’ve built up before and trying to build something different and hopefully better, or worse in a good way. And this song is one of our favorites, because none of us are doing anything on it that we’ve ever done before. But we really enjoy playing it. The longer you go on as a band, the harder it is to surprise yourself.”

Coldplay, Violet Hill

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Violet Hill

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops i remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly i remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future’s architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You’d better lie low

If you love me
Won’t you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
And went out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When i’m dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won’t you let me know?

(Guitar Solo)

I don’t want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

So if you love me
Why’d you let me go?

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won’t you let me know?

Curiosities

After this song was offered as a free download for a week on coldplay.com in April, such was the demand that the site crashed. The week after this song was made available free for download, it still sold sufficient copies for it to debut at #8 on the UK chart and #40 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Coldplay told Take 40 that this is a song about authority, but at the same time the chorus suggests other things.

Coldplay, The scientist

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

The scientist

Come up to meet you
Tell you I’m sorry
You don’t know how lovely you are
I had to find you…
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh let’s go back to the start…
Running in circles; coming in tails
Heads on a silence apart

Nobody said it was easy
It’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science; science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh it’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I’m going back to the start

Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
x4

Curiosities

Chris Martin (from Rolling Stone July 14, 2005): “On the second album I was thinking there was something missing. I was in this really dark room in Liverpool, and there was a piano so old and out of tune. I really wanted to try and work out the George Harrison song ‘Isn’t It A Pity,’ but I couldn’t. Then this song came out at once. I said, ‘Can you turn on the recorder?’ The first time I sung it is what’s out there.”

Coldplay, Death and all his friends

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Death and all his friends

All winter we got carried
Away over on the rooftops
let’s get married
All summer we just hurried
so come over, just be patient, and don’t worry
So come over, just be patient, and don’t worry

So come over, just be patient, and don’t worry

And don’t worry

No I don’t wanna battle from beginning to end
I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge
I don’t wanna follow Death and all his friends

No I don’t wanna battle from beginning to end
I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge
I don’t wanna follow Death and all of his friends

And in the end
We lie awake, and we dream of making our escape

And in the end
We lie awake, and we dream of making our escape

Curiosities

The vocals for this song which features a male choir were recorded in an art gallery in Barcelona that was once the medical room of an ancient nunnery. Drummer Will Champion explained to Q magazine July 2008: “This is us singing all together and then another us singing together. The Coldplay Choir. And it had an echo that lasted for a long, long time. When we did a lot of group singing we just roped in whoever was around. Studio engineers, whoever.”
Chris Martin told MTV News: “Well, this is supposed to be the theme of the album, really. We’re aware of all the bad stuff in life, you know – i.e. Death and all his friends – but that doesn’t mean you should ever give in to it, you know? So we all sing that bit together really loudly, as kind of a message to ourselves: never giving up and never focusing on the bad stuff too much.”

Coldplay, Clocks

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Clocks

The lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead
Singing
Come out of the things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head
troubles that can’t be named
tigers waiting to be tamed
Singing

You are You are
Confusion never stops
closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know
Singing come out upon my seas
Curse missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease
Singing

You are, you are
You are, you are
You are, you are
You are, you are

And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares

You are, you are
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)

Curiosities

Lead singer Chris Martin came up with the lyrics and the piano riff shortly before Coldplay released the album. Since they didn’t have much time, they put it aside and planned to work on it for their next album. When Martin’s friend heard the demo, he convinced them to do whatever was necessary to record it for A Rush Of Blood To The Head, especially since the song deals with the importance of time.
Like many Coldplay songs, this is about love. The lyrics are about being in a conflicted, but very intense relationship as precious time slips away.

Coldplay, Cemeteries of London

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

Cemeteries of London

At night they would go walking ‘till the breaking of the day,
The morning is for sleeping…
Through the dark streets they go searching to see God in their own way,
Save the nighttime for your weeping…
Your weeping…

Singing la lalalalala la lé…
And the night over London lay…

So we rode down to the river where the toiling ghosts spring,
For their curses to be broken…
We’d go underneath the arches where the witches are in the saying,
There are ghost towns in the ocean…
The ocean…

Singing la lalalalala la lé…
And the night over London lay…

God is in the houses and God is in my head… and all the cemeteries in London…
I see God come in my garden, but I don’t know what he said,
For my heart it wasn’t open…
Not open…

Singing la lalalalala la lé…
And the night over London lay…

Singing la lalalalala la lé…
There’s no light over London today…

Curiosities

Coldplay recorded this song in a Barcelona church, which provided the distinctive echo. Bass player Guy Berryman told Entertainment Weekly: “When I imagine the song in my head, I see London in 1850. A hell of a lot of rain and men in top hats.”
This folk-tinged ghost story was written overnight after producer Brian Eno’s assistant, Markus Dravs, assessed one of Chris Martin’s songs as “good” but not yet “great.” Martin explained to Q magazine July 2008: “I was mortified. But if you tell me to write a better song, I’ll do it. He said it was good but said it in a German way. If you come in wis ze song, it’s finished, complete, great, I will say it’s great. Zis is not finished, not complete and therefore I cannot say it’s great. So I was, OK, f-k you, man! And the next day I came in and played Cemeteries Of London.”
This features some Spanish flamenco clapping. Chris Martin told MTV News that this was their first use of handclaps on any of the band’s albums. Drummer Will Champion added: “The Spanish flamenco clapping is incredible when you hear it done properly, although ours is a very crude and English version of it. It’s like more of a golf clap – ‘Good par!’ – or some seals.”
Chris Martin (from The Sun newspaper May 13, 2008): “It’s our attempt at a Smiths song. It’s about witch drownings. I was interested about that period in London where people were supposedly drowned for being a witch. And that’s where that song came from. About being accused of something you didn’t do.”

Coldplay, A rush of blood to the head

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

A rush of blood to the head

He said I’m gonna buy this place and burn it down
I’m gonna put it six feet underground
He said I’m gonna buy this place and watch it fall
Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls
Oh I’m gonna buy this place and start a fire
Stand here until I fill all your heart’s desires
Because I’m gonna buy this place and see it burn
Do back the things it did to you in return

Ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah
He said I’m gonna buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
Oh and I’m gonna buy this place, that’s what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head

And honey all the movements you’re starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it all disappear without a trace
And they call as they beckon you on
They said start as you mean to go on
Start as you mean to go on

He said I’m gonna buy this place and see it go
Stand here beside my baby watch the orange glow
Some’ll laugh and some just sit and cry
You just sit down there and you wonder why
So I’m gonna buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
And I’m gonna buy this place, that’s what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head
Oh to the head

And honey all the movements you’re starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it all disappear without a trace
And they call as they beckon you on
They say start as you mean to go on
As you mean to go on, as you mean to go on

So meet me by the bridge, meet me by the lane
When am I gonna see that pretty face again
Meet me on the road, meet me where I said
Blame it all upon
A rush of blood to the head

Curiosities

This song is about the uncertainties of life. It briefly tackles the subjects of death and war.
The phrase “A rush of blood to the head” is one characteristic to the UK, basically meaning something done that is spontaneous and without pre-planning. Taking this into account changes the theories about the song.

Coldplay, A message

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

A message

My song is love
Love to the lovers shone
And it goes up
You don’t have to be alone

Your heavy heart
Is made of stone
And it’s so hard to see you
Clearly you don’t have to be on your own
You don’t have to be on your own

And I’m not gonna take her back
And I’m not gonna say I don’t mean that
You’re the target that I’m aiming at
And I’ll get that message home

My song is love
My song is love I know
I’m on fire for you
Clearly you don’t have to be alone
You don’t have to be on your own

And I’m not gonna take her back
And I’m not gonna say I don’t mean that
You’re the target that I’m aiming at
But I’m nothing on my own
Got to get that message home

And I’m not gonna stand and wait
Not gonna leave it until its much too late
On a platform I’m gonna stand and say
That I’m nothing on my own
And I love you, please come home

My song is love, is love I know
And I’ve got to get that message home

Curiosities

The lyrics and melody were inspired by the hymn “My Song Is Love Unknown,” which was written in 1664 by English composer John Ireland. Lead singer Chris Martin has described this as his favorite hymn. He told Q magazine: “There’s quite a big church influence (on the band). Because we all grew up singing in assemblies every morning. Of course. When you think about it, the most music we heard up to the age of 17 was singing hymns every day in school. Didn’t most people? In assembly?”

Coldplay, 42

Author: Cédric  //  Category: Coldplay, Songs

Lyrics

1973

Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well
Oh..

Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more

Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head oh…
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well oh…

Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more

You thought you might be a ghost
You thought you might be a ghost
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close

You thought you might be a ghost
You thought you might be a ghost
You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close
You didn’t get to heaven but you oh oh
Oh oh…

Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head
Oh..

Curiosities

Chris Martin explained the lyrics to MTV News: “Well, the whole record is – if it were a Notorious B.I.G. record, it’d be called ‘Life and Death.’ Maybe because we’ve had some people close to us who we’ve lost, but some miracles – we’ve got kids. So, life has been very extreme recently, and so both death and life pop up quite often. It’s called ’42′ because it’s my favorite number. And I think it’s probably in Will’s top three favorite numbers too.”
Chris Martin (from The Sun newspaper May 13, 2008): “It’s our attempt at a Radiohead song. No, it’s our 97th attempt at a Radiohead song, but the first one that’s worked.”
